This is a direct-answer FAQ, not an essay. If you have a specific question before ordering, it is probably below.

How much should I take?

For resin, start small -- a pea-sized amount is a reasonable first dose if you have never used resin before. You can always take more after waiting to feel the initial effect; you cannot easily take less once it is in you. For gummies, the dose is already measured into each piece: take one and wait before deciding whether you want another, rather than eating several back to back on your first try.

How long until I feel it?

Kava's effects typically build over the first twenty to thirty minutes rather than hitting immediately. The most common first-timer mistake is deciding nothing is happening at the ten-minute mark and taking more before the first dose has actually kicked in. Give it time before you judge it.

Can I drive after taking kava?

No. Kava can affect coordination, reaction time, and alertness, the same categories of impairment that make any substance unsafe to drive on. Treat a resin or gummy session the way you would treat any substance that affects the central nervous system: plan to stay in for the evening, not to drive afterward.

Can I drink kava (or take a gummy) every day?

We are not going to give you a blanket yes or no here, because that answer depends on your own health, any medications you take, and how your body responds -- questions a doctor is better positioned to answer than a product FAQ. What we can tell you is that the liver-safety research on kava (covered in full in our safety article, linked below) points toward moderation and attention to your own response over time, not daily use without a second thought.

Can I mix kava with alcohol?

No. Both affect the liver and the central nervous system, and combining them is not something the safety research supports. If you are choosing between an evening kava session and drinking, pick one, not both.

Kava is legal at the federal level in the United States, but a small number of states have their own restrictions. Check your state's specific rules before ordering if you are unsure.

What is the difference between the three resin lines?

Isa 'Awa is the heaviest and most full-bodied, generally reached for in the evening. Mahakea 'Awa is balanced -- workable for daytime or evening depending on how much you take. Nene 'Awa is the lightest and most cerebral, more of a daytime, clear-headed option, and it is harvest-limited so it is not always in stock. Our first-timer's guide (linked below) goes into more detail on choosing between them.

What is the difference between the gummies?

Chill Kava Hearts use Isa 'Awa resin at a lighter, daytime-leaning dose. Heavy Relax Kava Hearts add instant kava on top of the same Isa 'Awa resin for a heavier, before-bed option. Dragon Tamer Hearts blend Isa 'Awa resin with red lotus and wild lettuce for the heaviest gummy we make. Lotus of Tranquility Hearts blend Isa or Mahakea 'Awa with blue lotus and kanna for a lighter, more uplifting daytime combination.

Can kava help with anxiety or help me relax?

Some people use kava, including Heartlight's resin and gummies, to support relaxation as part of an evening or wind-down routine. That is a structure-function claim, not a medical one: it describes a supported wellness use, not a treatment for anxiety or any diagnosed condition. If you are managing a diagnosed anxiety condition, talk to a doctor about how kava might or might not fit alongside your actual treatment, rather than substituting it for care you are already receiving.

Will I feel groggy the next day?

This varies person to person and depends on the format and amount taken -- a heavier evening resin or a Heavy Relax or Dragon Tamer gummy is more likely to carry into the next morning than a lighter daytime option like Nene 'Awa Resin or a Chill Kava Heart. If you have an early morning ahead, that is a reason to choose a lighter format or a smaller amount rather than the heaviest option in the catalogue, and to try any new product for the first time on a night when a slower next morning is not a problem.

Can I combine resin and a gummy in the same session?

We would not recommend it for a first-timer. Both formats deliver the same underlying resin, so combining them without experience in either one on its own makes it harder to know how much you actually took, and harder to learn your own tolerance. Once you have a clear sense of how a single format affects you, that is a more informed time to experiment -- not before.

Am I too sensitive to certain ingredients to try the blend gummies?

Dragon Tamer Hearts and Lotus of Tranquility Hearts add botanicals beyond kava root -- red lotus, wild lettuce, blue lotus, and kanna depending on the blend. If you have a known sensitivity to any botanical ingredient, or you are not sure, check the full ingredient list on the specific product page before ordering, and consider starting with a single-ingredient resin or Chill/Heavy Relax gummy first so you know how you respond to kava on its own.

Should I take kava if I am pregnant or nursing?

We do not have Heartlight-specific guidance for pregnancy or nursing, and this is squarely a question for a doctor rather than a product FAQ. The safe default is to not use kava, or any new supplement, during pregnancy or while nursing without first talking to your doctor.

Will kava show up on a drug test?

Kava is not one of the substances a standard workplace drug panel screens for. It is not a controlled substance in the way tests are typically built to detect. That said, we are not a testing lab and cannot promise the result of any specific test; if a clean result is critical for you, that is worth confirming directly with whoever administers the test.

How long does shipping take?

What if I do not like it or need to return it?

Check Heartlight's current refund and returns policy before ordering, since kava is an ingestible product and the return terms for ingestibles are stricter than for most goods. The policy page has the specifics.
